Final Report NCSDH

Final report of the National Commission on Social Determinants of Health (NCSDH) (only in portuguese) during its two years of existence since March 2006, the NCSDH – comprised of 16 personages from civil, scientific, cultural and business life in Brazil and supported by a technical department installed at Fiocruz – developed a series of activities that contributed to the national debate on problems concerning the social determinants and iniquities in health. These activities were focused on the production of knowledge and information on the social determinants of health (SDH), on review and analysis of the policies and programs of intervention on these determinants and on communications with the diverse sectors of society regarding the importance of the SDH and the possibilities for acting upon them.

The report is the product of this work. Based on information and existing knowledge found in diverse information systems or recorded in national and international literature, it analyzes the impact of the SDH at their various levels on the health situation, with special emphasis on the iniquities in health. It encompasses the determinants related to individual behavior and living and working conditions, as well as those related to the economic, social and cultural macrostructure. Its recommendations, solidly grounded on the analysis of the health situation and the interventions in progress, are designed to enable more sustainable coordination and efficient action on the social determinants.
